Daniel O. Elliott Jr, a US optometrist of Southbend, Indiana can claim the first recorded production of aspheric contact lenses in 1964. Starting with a spherical surface he gradually made this ellipsoid. By 1967 he had developed a balloon tool which with compressed air could vary the curve.
